Storyboards ☆。*
When I was younger and didn't have the resources to animate, I would usually limit myself to putting my ideas into comics and little thumbnails where I could plan out shots and camera angles. Turns out, baby maggy eventually learned those are called storyboards and are part of the the planning of most if not all audiovisual content. Since I used to struggle a lot with drawing digitally, I did most of my first storyboards completely on paper, later on finally getting used to doing them digitally.
I never used any software specifically designed to make storyboards. I know they exist out there and have tried them before, but I'm so used to just importing a template onto a regular drawing software and taking it from there. I assume it's because it mimics the traditional way of going about it closer than with a specific software for the job?
2021-2024
Most of my college assignments had to do with directing and producing animation projects, so inevitably I had to do a lot of storyboards and have them be passed around in between classmates and teachers to take notes on. As much as I like to take it upon myself to do most of the work for my own creations, I got humbled trying to storyboard a whole shortfilm by myself. I did it, but it wasn't the best experience.
For a group animation project, me and my group divided all tasks among us three, so we ended up doing a little bit of everything. I took part in making some storyboards for two scenes in the project which I later on ended up doing some animation for as well. I was also responsible for animating most of the human characters, so I knew I needed to make future maggy's job easier by leaving a bunch of notes on the storyboards regarding movements, facial expressions and even camera movements.
As mentioned before, I used to make storyboards by hand most of the time, making use of sticky notes and masking tape to cover up mistakes. For time restraints during college, this was the last time I made my storyboards on paper, which was disappointing since I loved drawing them traditionally. Now I have a bunch of empty templates sitting somewhere in my bedroom waiting to be used.
