Butters

Butters is a humanoid butterfly who lives in the Bug Block in The Great Forest. She’s the type of person who never settles down, always looking for that thrill and adrenaline of being part of something. By itself, that isn’t a bad thing, but it turns into one when all she does is get into cults and pyramid schemes.
In the series, Butters is the emotions of the group; she’s very hyper and quick-witted and hand-on-deck, a good friend to get things done with.

Profile

Appearence

Butters is a humanoid butterfly creature. Her body is a cartoonish humanoid from the waist up and butterfly looking from the waist down. Her chest, hands/paws, underside and inner sides of her limbs are covered in white fur, while the rest is covered in a blue chitin shell similar to a bug’s exoskeleton. In the areas where her exoskeleton segments connect, like around her joints and lower back, the skin underneath it is coloured yellow.

Her face is round and white, her eyes orange and blue, half-lidded and droopy with three sharp eyelashes. Her nose is a cyan triangular shape with a long tip, similar to a butterfly’s proboscis, her mouth a small smile. At the top of her head sit two long, thin antennae that thicken and spiral inwards at the ends. Her hair is the same shade of blue as her chitin shell, parted in the middle and brushed back, about below-shoulder length.

Butters doesn’t wear any clothes. Her arms are covered in blue chitin on the outside, the inner side of her arms the same white fur. In each hand and paw, her digits and palms have pawpads; her palms’ are cyan while her fingers’ are yellow. Her hands and paws have short, pointy black claws. From her chest to her naval, down all the way to the underside of her body, she’s covered in white fur, the inner side of her legs also covered in it. From her hips down, Butters has 3 legs on each side of her body. Along her upper back, she has a pair of butterfly wings; dark blue and orange at the top, with a single white dot, and blue on the bottom half.

Personality

Butters is at heart a determined bug; she’s hopeful about things, but tends to be pushy about how to go about finding thrill, happiness and reason in life. She usually has the right and best intentions at heart, but gets too easily wrapped up in causes and communities. She’s a bit naive in that regard, a little dumb even; she gets too wrapped up in situations to see how things will end. Because of that, she tends to get into arguments and petty fights with her friends more often than not about whatever cause or scam she got herself dented to that week. She’s also awful at lying, getting too anxious and rambling about how she’s totally not tricking someone - if she even knows that she’s tricking someone.

Story

Butters is the town’s “local activist”, though she’s the only now who calls herself that. Every weekday, you’ll find her knocking at someone’s door with a handful of pamphlets and a new cause that you too should be worried about; said cause changes every two weeks or so. She lives in a cocoon house hanging off a tree branch, the walls of her house being made of silk intertwined with pamphlets and bits of journal she finds from humans scattered around the forest.

Occasionally, she’ll disappear for days on end and later reappear, half-embarrassedly admitting how she’d joined a cult which ate poisonous berries to “see God”, but nobody liked her enough to invite her, or how she’d gone away to a pyramid scheme recruiting party, but everyone was sent to the hospital after getting skin infections, except her since nobody offered her free samples. The joke being that, despite always wanting to be a part of something, nobody ever lets her in on things, which leads to Butters getting away unscathed from almost every mess she gets herself into, only to fall for another "cause" the next week.

Relationships

Purp

Butters borderline hates Purp, but not really, it’s complicated. Butters sees Purp as someone who’s lazy and without any drive in life, simply letting the fate of the world decide what she’ll be for the rest of her life. For that, Butters feels like she’s above her friend for being more driven and “smarter” than her. However, while Butters keeps finding herself hopping from one situation to another, every single one coming crashing down around her, she envies how Purp has been able to get the comfortable fulfilling life she always wanted. That ends up causing a bunch of petty fights mostly from Butters’ side, while Purp is always too high to entertain her, which leaves Butters even more angry. Even so, whenever she does get sent back to square one, she has the hindsight to see how the way she was behaving was wrong and apologises to Purp, which never seems to take offence to the butterfly’s weird ramblings.

Bitela

Honestly not even Butters knows where she stands with Bitela. She barely gets to talk with the beetle, the bug getting around ever having to indulge in her ramblings or sometimes just moving behind other people in the friend group who can better handle Butters’ explosive personality. The only time they’ve ever interacted was when she dropped by Bitela’s house uninvited, having lost another cause she’d been to excited for. Despite their awkwardness, Bitela let her in and let her stay the day at her place, helping with the garden and such. It was a few hours of awkward but still sweet peace. That ended up never happening again though, as Butters got back on finding another community to join and back into her little cycle.

Nick "Sticks"

Nick is the bug Butters sees to be the only other “driven” one in the friend group. Being the more emotionally intelligent of the group, Nick is the only one who can keep up with Butters’ ramblings and make some sense of it, though the butterfly tends to use her friend more as a group therapist than anything else. Plus, if she is truly in danger, Sticks is the only other bug she’s willing to go ask for help.

Trivia

• Butters also smokes weed like Purp, but she'll never admit it.
  
• Stemming from her incredibly bad luck to always end up in cults or pyramid schemes and her weirdly good luck at getting out of them unharmed, nobody knows if Butters is either really unfortunate or fortunate. Some say she's cursed, others say she has " insane plot armor".
