Absolem

Absolem is a physical manifestation of old nostalgic love or the death of love, serving as an anti-Cupid. They wander aimlessly in a void in between dimensions, making see-through portals to peek into other people's love lives.

Profile

Appearence

Absolem is a centipede-looking creature, with a humanoid upper body connected to a centipede lower half. Absolem’s hair is black, messy and brushed forward, covering their face, the back tied into a long messy ponytail. Absolem wears a stitched up grey-pink suit over a white shirt; the suit has two sleeves on each side that are stitched together to form one wider sleeve. On the back, the suit has stitched-on embroidery angel wings. Absolem has two arms that, inside the wider sleeves, get disguised as one arm, one white glove for every pair of two-fingered hands they have. Their centipede half is black with a dark-grey underbelly, the space in between their segments having a pink-yellow hue. Absolem wears big rounded pink glasses that cover his four eyes; the upper pair of eyes is functional, while the lower one is always closed. They have a big pointy nose and black bug-like mandibles on the sides of their face. Absolem also has two long, which segmented antennae that Gertrude from his hairline and are tied together alongside the rest of his hair in a ponytail.

Personality

Absolem is a hopeless romantic; very emotional and overly attached to other's stories. Absolem is always peeking into other people's love lives to not think about their own, which ends up with them becoming way too invested in other people's love stories and get very emotionally affected if something bad happens. These situations will sometimes reach the point of Absolem trying to intervene in other people's business to "fix things", putting on a disguise and travelling into said couple's world. However, since Absolem is mostly seen as a "bad omen" for romantic partners, he's more inclined to pull the strings in the background rather than making big and loud gestures.
Absolem tends to feel for other people, being overly empathetic which leads him to getting hurt easily. He's capable of being very sassy and mean about new couples or not-so-great relationships, but if he sees something genuine and loving, he'll quickly get obsessed.

Story

If Cupid represents the freshness of youthful love, Absolem is the longing of long gone love.

Absolem represents all the bad parts of the aftermath of love; longing for someone else, for company, for a love now long gone. In opposite of what they represent, Absolem is a very romantic creature, though it understands its situation as being practically a anti-cupid. It lives in between dimensions in a dark watery void, swimming in the infinite black. It peeks down at other dimensions through portals/windows to spy on other people's love lives, longing for what they too have. It is usually invisible to whatever dimension it is spying on. However, if spotted, it is considered to be a bad omen, as in whoever spotted them will see their relationship fall to shambles and their love life ruined. For that reason, Absolem does his best to stay out of the public's eye, using a disguise to sneak around wherever he may go.

Absolem is an avid collector of all things love related, though he tends to get them always a little too late. Predictably, their favorite holiday is Valentine's day, and they always try to get their hands on leftover things from the festive time. Stale chocolate boxes, dried bouquets, crumpled up love letters. He keeps it all religiously with him in the void, keeping it all close to him as if decorating a house. Absolem will tell you they're half of a lovelife, but in reality they WERE a love life. Legend that says that, once upon a time, two lovers met at the world's edge, their connection so strong that they melted into a creature of its own. When one of the partners died inside the fusion, the other went mad with longing, turning the creature of love into a monster of longing and despair. Nobody knows if this is where Absolem actually came from.

Relationships

Thang

Aware of their existence, but doesn't now what to do with this information. Looking into the creature's work loveaffair with their boss felt like not being able to look away from a carcrash. Absolem knows Thang is out there and checks on the thing sometimes, but is yet to decide if they wish to interfere in the situation, or let it stagnate as is.

Trivia

• Absolem's bug iconography comes as a contrast to Cupid's bird motifs (angels, doves, etc.). If doves represent love and romanticism, bugs were picked to represent the death and rotting of love. Because, who else comes to eat the dead if not bugs?
• Absolem has two pairs of eyes to represent the two lovers that used to form it... or maybe just because he's bug looking. Nevertheless, the bottom pair of eyes is NEVER open.
• Absolem's design and iconography are very inspired by aesthetics like lovecore and meatcore.
