The Outskirts
- Mr.Sul
The Outskirts is an area in CHAPTER [[GARY]] referring to the forest area on the outer side of the city.
It's an area in-game exclusive to the Outsider Route, as it is the place where the player can find and fight Kinder.
Main Story
Insider Route
This area is not present at all in the Insider Route.
Outsider Route
During the Outsider Route, The Outskirts serve as an area for the player to explore and find Kinder, one of Sul's team members. The area also serves to give Kris and Ralsei some time alone to reflect on how none of the Darkners in this new city seemed to live for a Lightner as they're supposed to, instead either living for themselves or for another Darkner. This idea bothers Ralsei a lot, as that's simply not how things are supposed to be.
Sublocations
Outskirts Entrance
The Outskirts Entrance is the entrance area for the location. It is situated on the East side of the Dire District, where the city cuts off to dirt paths that lead into the forest. This area is sparse in enemies and foliage until the player fully enters the forest.
Palm Tree Forest

Palm Tree Forest is the first half of the Outskirts area. This area is dense with vegetation and enemies, mostly Trotochans and Bugz. In this area, the player can find an abundance of art supplies mixed in with the cybernetic vegetation: giant crayons amidst palm trees, eraser and pencil shavings mixed with the soil and notes and sketches stapled to the trees.
- Palm Tree Puzzles : The Palm Tree Puzzles is a group of 3 puzzles that the party must solve to proceed through the forest. Each puzzle consists of 4 paper cut-outs on the floor. To solve the puzzle, the player must reorganize the cut-outs until they form an image. The first puzzle forms a palm tree, the second one forms a crayon, and the third one forms the shape of a face with pigtails. We later learn this is the face of Kinder's original Lightner, Paige.
Acid Wetlands
Acid Wetlands is the second half of the Outskirts area. This area is still dense with vegetation and enemies, mostly Werewires and Bugz, and also has a mix of art supplies mixed with the vegetation. This area is unique for its acid swamps, leaving most of the traveling to be done by either swinging from vines to land in spots of land, or by solving smaller puzzles to drain the acid blocking the paths to other areas.
- Acid Wetlands Puzzle : This puzzle is the last puzzle the party finds before fighting Kinder. It's a maze of acid paths where the player can drain and reroute rivers to form a safe, clear path to a chest on the other side of the puzzle. Completing the puzzle and opening the chest rewards the player with the Paper Blade, a weapon for Kris to help with the Kinder boss fight.
Clearing
The Clearing is the final area of the Outskirts, where Kris and Ralsei find and fight Kinder. Like the name implies, the area is a clearing in the swampy forest surrounded by acid. Once the party steps into the clearing, they get ambushed by Kinder, who takes them for tresspassers and immediatly iniciates combat.
Once the battle is over and Kris informs Kinder they're only there to inform him of Sul's plan, Kinder allows Kris and Ralsei to pass through the rest of the forest and disappears to meet Sul at The Pharmacy.
Kinder's House
Kinder's House is a secret area only accessible if the player acquires the Paper Blade, which can be used to cut through foliage to reveal a hidden path that leads to a house in the middle of the forest. Inside, the player finds the house full of drawings, art materials and trinkets, assumed to have been collected by Kinder. The player can also find notes that reveal Kinder's intentions to following Sul despite his worries, how he only wishes to return to his Lightner's side no matter what.
Trivia
- The Outskirts was inspired by dense tropical climates, which are unique for their palm tree forests and swamps.
