GARY

*
You { met } him already, right? So, what do you think ? He's the { BEST } isn't he ?!
You'll be seeing { plenty } of him if you stick around for a while!

- Ben

Gary is a Darkner that is implied to rule over the new Cyber City he resides in. He's the main antagonist and final bossfight of his own chapter.

At the end of the chapter, Gary uses his last remaining energy to fuse himself with his TV Studio Tower, creating his GIGA Gary form to fight the party. This serves as a 2nd phase to his final bossfight during the Insider Route.

Gary is his the main villain of his own chapter. Unbeknownst to the player, he was the one to open the Dark Fountain to recreate Cyber City to his liking. However, there is no Dark Fountain. Gary's own existence is enough to keep the city alive; he is the Dark Fountain. So to escape the new city and end the chapter, it is necessary to kill him.

Profile

Appearence

Gary is a massive, lanky and unbalanced robot Darkner. He wears a black sleeveless blazer with big sharp shoulder pads, adorned with a red tie with a blue gem over the knot. It is unknown if he wears a white shirt underneath it or if the white collar is a single piece of fabric connected to the blazer itself. He wears black undergarments and crotch-high, high heeled white boots with blue gems on the outer side of the boot, around where his ankle should be. He still wears his pink and yellow glasses, and has what seems to be the NEO suit’s wings bolted to the back of his blazer.

Gary’s skin is white and fake, his face shape similar to Spamton’s but thinner and longer, also keeping the red cheeks. His teeth are massive, filling his whole mouth with his canines pointing outwards from the corners of his mouth. His hair is styled all slicked back like a long, overgrown mullet that reaches down around mid-back length, spiked and messier in the back. His neck, spine, arms and connections from his legs to his crotch are thick metal tubes with ridges that circle the metallic cylinders. Gary is significantly top-heavy, his torso and blazer much wider than the rest of his body, which causes him to walk wobbly and lose his balance a lot if not sitting down or leaning against something.

Personality

Gary is cocky, sharp-witted and full of himself. He's talkative for all the wrong reasons, trying to lead conversations to get what he wants out of people. He's extremely manipulative, trying to get himself out of trouble through smooth talking, offering favours or just the idea of help to people who need it.

Despite most people being very aware of who Gary actually is, he despises being called Spamton and will fake not knowing who that is, getting more and more irritated as the player and other characters associate the two. Being a product of both the internet and TV, Gary mixes and uses topics and references from both things in his speech. His manner of speaking is still garbled and glitchy, though he can conduct himself fairly well if not in an emotional state. Despite his loud and bombastic way of speaking, Gary is very stone-faced, keeping his wide grin and hidden stare unbreakable during moments where one would expect him to be more excited or emotional than shown.

Gary puts up the front of being very unaware of why Kris and the party arrived at his place, faking to knowing what things like Dark Fountains are, which would be practically impossible. When alone with Kris, he somewhat drops that facade, tempting them with letting Gary “cut their strings”.

Main Story

History

Sometime after Kris and the party closed the Dark Fountain in the Cyber World, Spamton was left behind in the game's code as the chapter came to a close. It is implied that through a sliver of the same power that Kris and/or the player has, Spamton was able to save himself by opening a new Dark Fountain. With his newfound power, Spamton had the ability to rewrite Chapter 2 as he saw fit, making himself the ruler of a new Cyber City that he would be able to reconstruct.

In between the events of Chapter 2 and the next day, almost two decades passed in the Dark World Spamton had created. During that time, Spamton explored his new abilities, equating them to the “Heaven” he’d been searching for. During the first few years, he spent his time rebuilding Cyber City to his liking by creating new areas, changing already existing ones, and replacing existing Darkners with his own creations. Darkners like Queen and the Addisons were punished for having wronged Spamton in his past, being turned into downgraded humiliating versions of their former selves. However, other Darkners like Swatch were given new roles and kept somewhat their former lifestyles serving Spamton. It’s implied that Swatch served as a confidant for Spamton, even if the two did not get along that well at first. As Spamton started rebranding himself, he changed his name to Gary, also changing how he wanted to present himself. It’s implied that Swatch might have helped him build upon that.

Sometime during that transition, Gary began wondering about what was left of his previous coding. While testing out if he could still create pipis, out of hundreds of malformed eggs, one hatched with a curious little white creature inside. Panicked, Gary took it to Swatch, who also started panicking. While Gary suggested they should get rid of it, Swatch convinced him to keep the little guy after some arguing. Gary named the little hatchling Pipis Benedict, much to Swatch’s dismay. Gary eventually found his new passion in being Cyber City’s one and only news host, launching the only available TV channel in the area: Cyber City News. He started building their “forever home” over Queen’s Mansion, changing it to a TV studio complex with residences inside. While he worked, Swatch was the one mostly taking care of the hatchling. It’s implied that Gary never bothered to take much care of his own offspring, leaving that job for Swatch while he focused on how people seemed to hang on his every word on TV. Settling in on his new calling, Swatch and the hatchling soon fell by the waysides, becoming less and less of a priority in his life.

Some time later, Gary and Swatch noticed how the hatchling, who now called himself Ben, wasn’t developing like how they were expecting, his little arm-wings underdeveloped compared to the rest of his body. Gary suggested operating on the kid, switching out parts of him for robotic replacements and prosthetics. Swatch vehemently disagreed with that and an argument broke out over what should be done with the kid, which later turned into a general discussion about their past life together. During that argument, it’s implied that Swatch said something that sent Gary into a spiral, the man grabbing Swatch by his clothes and dropping him into a sinkhole in the tower, never to be seen again. It’s implied that Gary was never the same after that, solely focusing on his job as a news host and very little besides that. Ben, without someone to speak up for him, was tricked into agreeing to have his body changed and augmented with robotic prosthetics. From that point on until the events of the Chapter, Gary’s mental state kept deteriorating. He grew paranoid that somehow, someone was waiting outside of his TV studio to catch him and tear down everything he’d built for himself. Because of that, he tried salvaging the remains of the NEO suit that still reside in the basement, using the machine’s power to create a portal to get him out of the world he’d built. It’s implied that, during his many attempts to leave, other Darkners from other Dark Worlds were pulled into his dimension, Gary’s constant meddling with his world’s coding and laws breaking the world he lived in.

Gary soon became a recluse celebrity, still broadcasting his news segments from his tower and ruling over the city. He learned to keep an unbreaking pokerface for the TV and life in general, preferring to take on life face-on and leave his feelings apart from it. Ben grew to idolise his dad, not remembering much from his childhood. Gary gave him jobs at running the TV Studio’s gift shop and doing guided tours around the city to earn extra cash.

Chapter [[GARY]]

After the Spamton NEO fight, the player finds Spamton in the basement. Usually, that’s where his character arc ends as he becomes an item for Kris to carry with them throughout the rest of the chapter. However, that doesn't happen. Due to a game bug, Spamton does not die. The trigger in the game's code to make Spamton disappear and become an item doesn't activate, so the game is left confused over what to do with the defeated enemy. With the game broken on that aspect, the player is forced to leave Spamton hanging in the basement and go finish the chapter, fighting Queen and closing Cyber City's Dark Fountain as intended.

A few days later, that same Dark Fountain reopens. Not only that, but the whole day of the fountain opening begins repeating itself, everyone else seemingly unaware of what is happening. Kris and the party, puzzled, go back in to investigate what had happened. This time, things were different. Cyber City was rebranded to a dark gloomy metropolis, with Spamton as its ruler and... news host. Unbeknownst to the party, Spamton somehow rebranded himself as Gary; a massive robot star who had it all: fame, power, and a city at his feet. Gary got his so desired second chance to be a big shot, and he wasn't gonna let a bunch of kids take that away from him again.

After meeting the Fun Gang at the city's entrance via remote security robots, Gary invites them into his TV Studio Tower in a friendly way, though even that leads to another fight. Gary insists that whatever Dark Fountain the group is looking for isn't here, but that they are welcome to look around as much as they'd like to to be sure of it. This is an offer the player can either accept or decline, branching into the two routes of the chapter: the Insider Route or the Outsider Route.

In the Insider Route, with the player accepting Gary's offer, the whole chapter is spent inside the TV Studio Tower, blocking out anymore exploring that could have been done outside. Gary appears sporadically around the tower; either spying on the gang through TV screens or personally appearing in places he shouldn't be able to get in. With this, it is implied Gary has some ability relating to teleporting or fast-travelling. After meeting Swatch in the lower levels of the Tower, Gary will warn Kris about going in "too deep about things", that whatever it is they're looking for isn't down there, and that they shouldn't try to go down there again.

After the Fun Gang realize they'd been sent on a wild goose chase, they return to Gary to confront him yet again. They find him at the rooftop of his own studio tower and the final bossfight of the game commences. Defeating Gary at the top of the tower will trigger the second phase of his bossfight, in which he melts into the floor and fuses himself with the surrounding buildings, creating GIGA Gary. Defeating him in this form will cause whoever was in control of the DELTARUNE universe - implied to be Gaster - to reset the timeline back to after the Spamton NEO bossfight and fix the disparity that caused this problem in the first place. If the conditions for the secret boss of the chapter are met, Gary's bossfight will be replaced with the secret bossfight.

In the Outsider Route, with the player declining Gary's offer, the Fun Gang get kicked off the TV Studio Tower and spend the whole chapter in the streets of the new Cyber City without any of Gary's input. He's mentioned by shopkeepers and NPCs, but he's only seen again when the player breaks into the studio to confront him again.

Relationships

Ben

Gary is Ben's dad, his creator, the one who brought him into this world all wrong and fixed him up expecting praise in return. He expects the best and only the best out of his son, giving him task after task and waiting for the boy to fail. But, since he never does, Gary holds Ben as his best defendor, someone who will risk it to protect his dad. It's a human shield who Gary can discard if used.

Swatch

Once a friend, once something. Gary's relationship with Swatch has been complicated since they first met at Queen's Mansion. There's some kind of care there, even if Gary can only channel it through being extremely awkward and over the top. It was with Swatch that he learned to keep his head straight and in the game. However, all it took was one simple revelation to make it all come crumbling down. Now, Gary keeps him as far away as he can. Still in reach for taunting, not close enough to get attached.

Mr.Sul

By trying to break out of his own dimension, Gary ruined the lives of many other Darkners; trying to reach into their dimensions caused irreparable damages to the people who were unfortunate enough to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. One of those people was Sul. Now, everyone whose lives he ruined are falling into his dimension as the fabric of reality thins with every failed experiment. Gary is secure inside his TV News Station, hiding away from someone else completely. Meanwhile, he has no idea how many other people are after him.

In-Battle

Attacks

Gary

Gary is the second and final boss of his own chapter; it begins and ends with him. Both his bossfights are riddled with questionable but avoidable mechanics as he tries to play dirty to have his way. The bossfight consists of mostly missile attacks, Gary himself not liking to get up-close and personal with people who are trying to kill him.

The first fight takes place at the news set of his studio, after Kris and the gang are taken into the tower by Ben. Some of his attacks are:

The second time Gary uses this attack, his headset microphone will shoot out extra electric bolt-shaped missiles at the soul;

The fight ends when Gary's protection reaches 0HP, since his desk had been protecting him from all the damage

The second fight takes place at the top of the NewsStation Tower, after Kris and the gang realize the Dark Fountain they need to close is inside of Gary. Most of the attacks in this bossfight are either the same or similar the ones used in the first fight. Some are either slightly altered or combine two or more attacks into one. Some of his new attacks are:

The battle ends if Gary's HP reaches 10%, or if his Mercy reaches 90%

GIGA Gary

GIGA Gary is the final bossfight of his own chapter. In this final gigantic form, the player and their party stand on moving rail carts that go all around Cyber City, reminiscent of the Spamton NEO bossfight. The Yellow Soul mechanic returns as well, allowing the player to fire “big shots” to destroy obstacles and bullets. The strategy is simple: deplete GIGA Gary's HP to kill him and, consequently, close the Dark Fountain. Some of his attacks are:

Red Soul
Yellow Soul
